See Handwritten Lyrics to “Shoulders” from Isle of Rhodes

image of band Isle of Rhodes

Self-proclaimed as “The hardest hitting keyboard duo you’ll ever see”, Isle of Rhodes’ Robert Farren and Colin Behram make up the up-and-coming twosome that are reminiscent of acts like The Shins and Radiohead. Their new self-titled EP is out on iTunes now, and one of the EP’s strongest songs, “Shoulders”, has been written out for us by the band themselves. See the handwritten lyrics to the single below, as well as a quote from Isle of Rhodes’ frontman Rob:

‘Shoulders’ was written in a period of introspection for me. I was no longer in my young twenties, and I began to grasp that I hadn’t done much in my life yet. Time has a funny way of creeping up on you, and before you know it, five years have passed, and you begin asking yourself “what have I been doing?” The song sprung out of frustration that we work so hard, but don’t always leave a mark. However, the saving grace is that we get to share our lives and our ‘time’ with people we love. I imagined being older with my wife, having lived a tough long life, and feeling a sense of accomplishment. However, the accomplishment is somewhat melancholic because our shared time is destined to end. So, we must make the most of it, and strive to give meaning to our special ephemeral moment.” — Rob Farren

Flagship Where Are You Now? Image

Hailing from Charlotte, North Carolina, indie-rock five-piece Flagship is a band with a knack for melody and grandiose, open-air sounds. This October, they’ll release their self-titled debut album, produced by critically acclaimed producer Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Washed Out, Youth Lagoon).

Lead singer/songwriter Drake Margolnick recently broke down the band’s unique songwriting process. “Normallly we just start playing together, no talking, just playing. No planning,” said Drake. “Once we have the song, I’ll start mumbling and making noises and I’ll find my melody during that process and then go and write the lyrics.”

MetroLyrics is the exclusive premiere destination for Flagship’s brand new “Are You Calling?” lyric video.  The clip features a lone running figure, chasing the camera down an open gravel road, flipping through the song’s lyrics scribed on giant poster cards — a nod to to Bob Dylan’s legendary video for “Subterranean Homesick Blues” perhaps? The creative concept makes for an effective visual that’s well suited to the song’s lyrics. Watch it below.

If we had just one word to describe Brett Dennen‘s new song “Wild Child” it would be “free.” Not free in the complimentary sense. Free as in able to roam wherever your heart takes you; free to do things on your own terms. Following his 2011 debut LP Loverboy, Brett made the decision to go back to the basics for Smoke And Mirrors, his upcoming album due out October 22nd. During the writing process, Brett spent time at his mountain house in Northern California, where he found inspiration in the wilderness around him.

Judging by “Wild Child,” Brett’s return to his roots isn’t a sign of regression but instead signals his growth as an artist. The song bears the hallmarks of a mature singer/songwriter, with lyrics that are confident, assured, and touch on what it’s like to be young, free, and in love.

Brett was kind enough to handwrite out the lyrics to “Wild Child,” and included some pretty terrific water colors and illustrations — which couldn’t be a better fit for the “Wild Child” lyrics. Also, at the bottom of this post, you’ll find an official audio stream for the song via YouTube. Click play and read along to Brett’s handwritten “Wild Child” lyrics as you listen.

Poll: Kanye West vs. Jay-Z — Whose New Rap Album Is Better?

When it comes to rap, Watch The Throne duo/best buds Kanye West & Jay-Z know a thing or two about throwing down rhymes. Both kings of their craft, we didn’t think the two would be releasing solo albums within a month of each other, but here we are: Kanye’s Yeezus and Jay’s Magna Carta Holy Grail are both burning up the hip-hop charts. We want to know: which record are you a bigger fan of?

Both Ye and Jay’s albums are totally different when it comes to the way they’re made: Yeezus is only 10 songs in length, and has a more futuristic, synth-driven vibe to it, while Magna Carta is a classic hip-hop album in a modern world with 16 tracks in total. Lyrically, though, the pair stick to almost the same subject — power, race, assets, and even both mentioning their love of Paris (remember this song?). If you need to listen to both albums one more time, Kanye’s is here and Jay’s is here on Spotify. Vote in our poll below and have your say…

Welcome back as we bring you another session of Liner Notes, MetroLyrics’ interview series featuring songwriters discussing their craft.

In this episode, we sat down with Matt Pond, an NYC-based indie-rock singer/songwriter who’s been in the music biz since the late 90s. Once fronting the band Matt Pond PA, he decided to ditch the PA and go solo, with his album The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hands currently on the shelves.

In the interview, Matt discusses his songwriting and how it’s a never-ending process. “You think you’ve got it all, and then you realize you don’t have anything,” says Pond. ”You keep starting, and stopping, and it’s frustrating, but it feeds into the writing process.” He also claims that he needs total isolation to write his music, which can be difficult, especially when you reside in a city as big as New York.

Watch our exclusive Liner Notes session above for a look into the creative process of Matt Pond, and when you’re done, check out our previous Liner Notes episodes:

Matt Pond’s The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand is available on iTunes now. Share your thoughts with us on our interview with Matt in the comments below.

Legendary musician Sting‘s upcoming album The Last Ship is not only his first LP of new songs in 10 years (the last being 2003′s Sacred Love), it’s also inspired by a play the English musician wrote, which is set to be released in 2014 and also named “The Last Ship.” It makes sense then that the first single from the album, “Practical Arrangement,” is so lyrically-driven given that it’s intended for the stage. Dealing with lyrics about the complexity that is love, Sting sings to the woman he loves but who doesn’t love him back, begging her to give a relationship a try in hopes that love will bloom over time — a ‘practical arrangement’ of sorts.

We have the exclusive premiere of the lyric video for “Practical Arrangement,” which matches the somber, stirring tone of the ballad. Watch it below and follow along with Sting as he sings “Am I asking for the moon? / Is it really so impossible? / That you and I could soon / Come to some kind of arrangement?”

Download “Practical Arrangement” on iTunes now, and pre-order Sting’s The Last Ship, due this September 24th.

It’s A Boy! 3 Songs To Celebrate The Royal Baby

Congratulations are in order to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Will & Kate, on the birth of their son! The world has been watching and counting down for the royal baby, and now that he’s finally here, everybody is celebrating the new prince and third-in-line to the throne. To offer our congrats, we’ve pulled three lyrics that we think scream “royal baby boy” more than anything else, and you can see ‘em here…

3. Taylor Swift — Love Story

“You’ll be the prince and I’ll be the princess / It’s a love story baby just say yes…”

As the new Prince of Cambridge, it’s only fitting that we dedicate one of the world’s most famous pop lyrics about princes & princesses to the little royal heir.

2. Cold War Kids — Royal Blue

“From now on, just my feeling is true / From now on, call me Royal Blue…”

In case Will & Kate are still struggling on a name, why not pull a Beyonce & Jay Z and name the baby Royal Blue?

1. The Lion King — I Just Can’t Wait To Be King

“This child is getting wildly out of wing / Oh, I just can’t wait to be king…”

We couldn’t help it. We just had to put this song in here because it’s what the future king is definitely thinking. Well, when he grows up, anyway!

Do you have any songs you’d like to dedicate to the royal baby boy? Share them with us!

Just on the verge of becoming a household name when it comes to honest, vulnerable folk music, newcomer James Bay hails from the community of Hitchin, UK, and we expect big things from the performer. We’ve already played his debut EP The Dark Of The Morning dozens of times, mostly because it’s just Bay and the guitar and his lyrics that carry his music to new heights. If you’re in the middle of a breakup, watch out: listening to his EP that focuses around the last legs of a failing relationship might make you reach for the tissue box.
