Britney Spears To Take Concert Residency In Sin City: Her 4 Most Vegas-Worthy Songs

Although fans are still waiting for official confirmation, Britney Spears’ Las Vegas residency is imminent, and we couldn’t be more excited! Her team has been hinting at the announcement that Brit will take an extended concert contract in Sin City like fellow legends Celine Dion and Cher before her, tweeting from her dog’s account (yes, her dog has a Twitter!):

We’re so happy about this that we decided to compile 4 songs that would fit perfectly in Britney’s Vegas setlist. Read on and tell us if you agree…

4. I Love Rock N Roll

Choice Lyrics: “I love rock ‘n’ roll / So put another dime in the jukebox, baby / I love rock ‘n’ roll / So come and take some time and dance with me, ow”

Why It’s Perfect: Everybody loves a cover song, and this has to be Britney’s best one. Even though Crossroads was kind of a bust, this cover from the movie stands out as the only redeeming moment. Plus, if she wanted a cool stage costume she could totally dress up as Joan Jett!

3. Toxic

Choice Lyrics: “There’s no escape, I can’t wait / I need a hit, baby, give me it / You’re dangerous / I’m lovin’ it”

Why It’s Perfect: When we think of “Toxic” we think of all the amazing costumes in the video: the futuristic flight attendant, the red-wigged super hero, and of course the nearly-naked sparkly bodysuit — just think of how exciting it would be to see those costumes on the Vegas stage!

2. I’m A Slave 4 U

Choice Lyrics: “Always saying, little girl don’t step into the club / Well I’m just tryin’ to find out why cause dancing’s what I love”

Why It’s Perfect: This number would totally bring the house down because everyone knows the words, everyone has danced to it at least once in their lives, and the SNAKE. Did we mention the snake? The SNAKE!

1. Circus

Choice Lyrics: “I’m a like the ringleader, I call the shots / I’m like a firecracker I make it hot / When I put on a show”

Why It’s Perfect: Vegas shows are kind of like the circus, right? And the performer is like a ring leader? Well, perfect! We imagine Britney going BIG with this number and maybe borrowing a few Cirque Du Soleil performers for the show.

Now it’s your turn: which Britney song do you think would be awesome on the Vegas stage? Tell us below!

Interview: Miguel Discusses Writing Lyrics, Kaleidescope Dream Inspiration

When discussing musical inspiration with Miguel, it becomes apparent that he’s an artist who channels his passion and creativity directly into the music he puts out. Case in point: his recent standout album Kaleidoscope Dream, an LP full of personal lyrics cloaked in dreamy metaphors.

During our interview, Miguel explained the origin and inspiration behind Kaleidescope Dream. Much like his music, there was a poetic sensibility in the artful way Miguel constructed each answer — even breaking out into song a few times!

Read on to see what he had to say about his sophomore album Kaleidoscope Dream, his songwriting process, and what inspires his music.

MetroLyrics: When did you first start writing songs?

The earliest recollection of writing songs was when I was 8 — we had just started writing poetry in school and I guess it’s kind of a natural thing, if you love music, to then try to turn it into song. That’s kind of where everything began for me.

MetroLyrics: Is that how your songwriting process works now?

Being from Southern California, you spend lots of time on the beach. I grew up in a port city where the beach is about ten minutes away. You learn a lot about waves when you’re that close to the beach your whole life. You learn quickly that no wave is the same. They all have their own direction, speed. You learn to kind of adapt and ride the wave however it comes — and that’s how my creative process is. Sometimes it starts with music and other times it starts with lyrics.

MetroLyrics: Where did the [album and song] title “Kaleidoscope Dream” come from?

Image of recording artist MiguelThe song [Kaleidoscope Dream] began out of frustration. We were wrapping up All I Want Is You, my debut album, and the label was asking for a song that was in the same vein, same sound as the first single “All I Want Is You.” So I went back in [the studio] with Salaam Remi and it took me about 4 different sessions to get this song done. I’m not the type of person to try and duplicate things, if I’ve already done it, then I’ve done it and I’m not going to try and recapture the same vibe — so it took me quite some time to get this song done and I knew I wasn’t really into it. But after getting through it, the one stipulation I had was that Salaam and I could do a song with no pretense, no expectations, we would just be creating and he happily agreed.

[Salaam] played this beat for me and the vibe was just amazing. We were in this small New York studio and I was sitting there vibing to it and it just came to me and I said “turn the mic on” and I went into the live room and [starts singing] “I taste you / in infinite colors / collide in a fountain / amidst all the lovers / Kaleidoscope Dream.” It was absolutely, no meaning at the moment, but it felt right. After writing a bit more of the song I had gotten tired and we decided we’d come back to it. Fast forward to two years later, I had listened to the song so many times and I kept writing it, it had taken on a completely different meaning and it became like this sonic painting of my conversations with my life. I realized that these words were coming out of some innate desire to be passionate and live passionately. That’s where the rest of the lyric comes from and that’s what the song became in meaning to me. It was kind of like a conversation with my lifestyle and my sensibility. That’s what Kaleidoscope Dream as a metaphor really is: life. And everyone has their own Kaleidoscope Dream.

MetroLyrics: We heard “Where’s The Fun In Forever?” is a really personal song for you that you originally wrote for Alicia Keys. Can you explain why it’s so personal and what it means to you?

Absolutely. I don’t know if anyone else has experienced this moment, but, there’s a happy-go-lucky nature about my parents that I think I’ve inherited and I suppose for a long time I always felt like I was going to live forever, even though I knew I wasn’t. I don’t think I had really come to terms with the fact that I was getting older. More recently just watching my family and my grandparents start to age, you start paying attention and coming to terms with the fact that we’re really not indispensable, we have an expiration date.

pull quote miguel

Image of MiguelIt was around that time that we were underneath the stars in Jamaica. Alicia Keys had been so gracious to fly us out, and we were having this conversation about Queen and how epic their arrangements were — what if we came up with some Baroque-style progressions and like, underneath it we’re doing boom-bap, you know, like hip hop and how crazy that juxtaposition would be. Steve Moyzen, who’s the bassist on the song — amazing musician —starts playing this progression, and the drums just kinda come. I was looking up at the stars and all I could hear was the waves in the distance, and it occurred to me that it may be our greatest edge as humans, knowing that we don’t live forever. It may be that driving force or that knowledge that has driven our greatest accomplishments. You know, flying to the moon, or defining each element on the periodic table, or coming up with equations that can help us determine speed and distance, and time, and it was in that moment that I realized that it’s an advantage because it makes us passionate, it helps us to thrive and appreciate the moments we’re living in. I was kind of just looking out and [starts singing] “Where’s the fun in forever?” and then the rest just poured out.

About half the song in, Alicia came up and — we were actually working outside and I think this had everything to do with it, the setting. We were literally outside on top of a studio and we were just with the elements. I was looking out and you could see every star and all you hear is the waves. Alicia heard it and fell in love with it. But by that time it was such a personal discovery, it was like an epiphany, and I was tied to it. I’ve never co-written a song with another artist that I’ve felt so tied to. So we finished the song and I was so happy about it, but it was Alicia’s and I was hoping and praying that maybe, just maybe, she wasn’t going to use the song. And so I asked her if she was using it and if not to let me know, and she was really gracious about letting us keep it.

Bonus: When we sat down to chat with Miguel, he was nice enough to personally handwrite out lyrics from his songs “Kaleidoscope Dream,” “Candles In The Sun,” and “The Thrill,” and we’re giving away the sheet he wrote them on to one lucky fan. Head here to find out how you can win this terrific piece of Miguel lyric art.

Image of recording artist Lights

Though she’s probably better known for electro-pop songs, Lights‘ has no trouble stripping her music down and going acoustic. Exhibit A: this version of “Cactus in the Valley” from her upcoming album “Siberia Acoustic.” For the acoustic version of “Cactus in the Valley,” a piano and strings accompany vocals from Lights and Owl City. The lyrics — unchanged from the original — demonstrate Lights’ innate songwriting ability. Take this chorus for example:

“And wipe the mark of madness from my face / Show me that your love will never change / If my yesterday is a disgrace / Tell me that you still recall my name”

For the lyric video, Lights makes use of a good old fashioned pen and paper, writing out the lyrics to the song on composition pages. The handwritten text and stop motion camera make for an effective visual with a personal touch.

The first line of Barenaked Ladies new song “Boomerang” goes like this: “Moving at the speed of sound / You think I’d be slowing down / But I’m not losing my momentum.” It’s a fitting lyric for a band who’s been making music for going on 25 years. “Boomerang” is a song about persistance — an essential trait for a band prepping their 12th full-length album(!) for release on June 4th.

MetroLyrics is excited to premiere the official lyric video for “Boomerang.” In the video, lyrics to the new song plastered all over an urban landscape — on buildings, roads, sidewalks, and virtually everywhere else you can imagine. From the looks of things, it’s a tribute to the city of Toronto, the home-base of this Canadian quartet.

Interview: Mikky Ekko, Songwriter Extraordinaire

Singer/songwriter Mikky Ekko believes in quality over quantity when it comes to music. After speaking with the Nashville native about his writing style, career path, and upcoming debut album, it’s clear he’s not your ordinary, run-of-the-mill pop singer.

Though Mykki’s seen success around the blogosphere  —  his breakout song “Pull Me Down” made waves when it was released in the fall of 2012 — his highest profile work to date is his acclaimed collaboration with Rihanna on the hit song “Stay.” Written with up-and-coming pop songwriter/producer Justin Parker, “Stay” has been in our Top 100 chart ever since its simple-yet-striking music video was released (which Mikky stars in!), with people around the world coming together over the beautiful, simple piano ballad that showcases the raw and intimate side of RiRi we thought we’d never get to see.

But Ekko is more than a featured artist on a hit pop single: read our interview with Mikky and get a sense of how down-to-earth, well-spoken, and highly driven this rising star truly is.

————————————

MetroLyrics: Can you tell us how you got into music growing up?

I grew up singing in a church. That informed the way that I understand music and people coming together, people playing instruments together. I grew up in the south, [where] I gravitated towards a lot of black gospel as a kid. My mom listened to almost exclusively classical music, and my dad listened to Three Dog Night, Doobie Brothers, and a lot of stuff like that. As a kid, I really liked it,‘cause it’s just kind of out there and all about [the] song lyrics. I was born in Louisiana, but I grew up in Mississippi, and there’s a lot of country music there. A lot of country people. And I was one of them. *laughs*

[As] I grew up, I liked stuff that was a little bit tougher, a little bit edgier, pushing more boundaries. I cut my teeth on Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Blur. Then later on, just a lot of Bjork, Radiohead, and Pixies.

MetroLyrics: As a singer/songwriter, what inspires you to write and make music?

I was out one evening with Dan Wilson, who wrote “Someone Like You” with Adele, just talking with him, [and] we were trying to see if maybe it would be nice to write together. He said to me, “The only thing that’s worth writing is something that absolutely must be said”, and I was like “AW! Man, that’s such a cool way [to think about it]”, ‘cause I always felt that way about [songwriting].

I always wanted to make waves that haven’t been forced sonically. Whatever it takes, I don’t care. I’ll work harder, I’ll put in a thousand extra hours just to make it a little bit different, to make it a weird place that’s not factory pop. [So] when he said that, the way that that translates in my life is: you have to make your life more necessary. *laughs*

When you really have an opportunity to touch people, or when you have a gift, you can’t be selfish with it. At the end of the day, I think that if you have that gift, you have a responsibility to people [to share it]. It’s [in] our design that we should connect with other people. I don’t wanna speak for anybody else. That’s what I think.

MetroLyrics: What’s your general songwriting process like?

You know, I’m not going to give you all my tricks. What I’ll say is this: before Dan Wilson, I was listening to a lot of hip-hop. And what I realised about hip-hop is [that what] a lot of the greats know how to do is freestyle. Even great songwriters. I imagine if you said to Ryan Adams, “Write a song about me right now”, he could do it. He could sit there, and within ten minutes you’d have a song about you. It might not be incredible, but I can do it too.

The thing is, when you learn to [write], you have to learn to manifest who you are. And that’s what these [hip-hop greats] are doing. They’re not doing that to be cool, that’s the language that they speak. So if you can learn to manifest the idea that you are, it’ll come out naturally in your speech. Then all you have to do is learn to sing those words. Figure out what the most important words are, and then repeat them. *laughs*

MetroLyrics: I know what you mean. Some of the greatest lyricists are hip-hop artists, because that’s what they’re all about. So it makes sense.

A lot of it is born out of struggle, and it becomes the dance of [their] life. Music is just the necessary language.

If it’s not totally necessary for people, then the songs that they write don’t mean enough to really matter in people’s lives. Because their ideas are too small; they’re limiting. And most people have the tendency to do that, I think.

MetroLyrics: Let’s talk about “Stay”, which I thought it was one of the best pop songs released last year, if not the best…

I think it’s the best. *laughs*

MetroLyrics: *laughs* How did your song for Rihanna come about? What were you thinking about when you wrote it?

It was the most ironic moment in my short little life. Justin Parker (who also wrote “Stay”) wanted to go in with me [on the song] because he saw my footage from way back when of me doing, against my better judgement, a Jeff Buckley tribute. I was up there singing “Mojo Pin”, and he heard me sing that, and that’s why he wanted to work with me.

The way [Parker] understands songs is — he knows how to create a really interesting dynamic with chords that keeps you pleasantly surprised. And that’s so important. My whole goal was always to separate myself from the competition, no matter what it meant. Justin knows how to give people access to these really heartbreaking chords, and he understands how to push and pull really well with the chords. He knows how to put hurt in the chords, and that’s really good because I gravitate towards that.

At the end of the day, I worked so hard [on] that…but I didn’t even like it when I got done with it.

MetroLyrics: Really?

When we finished the song, I was really just afraid of a lot of things. Later on I went back and listened to [“Stay”] and realized that people are vulnerable. That’s what I didn’t like about it. When I went back and listened to it, it was like letting someone take a picture of you after disaster hit or something. And like, at the time, you’re just like “Why did you take that picture?” *laughs*

MetroLyrics: You’re in the midst of recording your new album. Could you share the main focus of this album with us?

The focus of the album for me has been, the more I write, the more I learn that I just have to be honest with people because that’s how I can communicate. And the more honest I am, the more I have to let all my flaws out. Which sucks sometimes. *laughs*

People will hear me roar on this record. Like they have definitely not heard me roar before. There’s some pretty intense songs [on this record]. There’s one song called “Riot”, and the intent of that one is not to ‘riot’ specifically…well, a little bit. I want to come out there and establish very clearly how much I care about giving people hope and showing people what the future is. I just wanna take people and pick ‘em up and hug ‘em. I think people really matter.

MetroLyrics: Let’s discuss your breakout song “Pull Me Down”, which is so beautiful sonically as well as lyrically. Why do you think people are connecting with it?

Because it’s an honest love song that’s about more than sex. What I wanted to create was just something that said, “I love you but I refuse to talk about [sex]. I wanna show you how much more I love you than that”. I wanted to try and find ways to say: what does [love] really feel like? [Clams Casino, who produced the song, and I] wanted it to sound like a totally new place. I mean, that’s just what I gravitate towards when it comes to music. I was like “Aw, Mik! This could be an incredible tune.”

For me, I try to force myself to write something great, and within the first hour that I was hanging out with [Clams] ever, I wrote the words. I think that I was forcing myself to freestyle when I did that. I wanted it to feel sensual but not sexual. Because that stuff comes anyway for people with love songs, whether you’re even writing about sex or not. People will draw their own conclusion, if it has a nice route, you know what I mean? It’s just about puttin’ in the hours. We worked so hard on that song.

MetroLyrics: Who have you been working with on this album?

I’ve already written with Justin Parker, who I wrote “Stay” with. [He’s written] a bunch of stuff with Lana Del Rey, and a song with Bat For Lashes on her most recent record. That song “Laura”, you know it?

MetroLyrics: Yes! We love that record.

ME: Yeah. He’s an incredible songwriter. And the thing is, you can hear how he emotes. He’s brutally honest with his chords, and he just…he refuses to let it just rust. He keeps pulling you through.

I’ve also been in [the studio] with John Hill, and Clams Casino. [Clams] is just my boy. *laughs* I don’t even know what we’re like when we get in the room. That’s sort of always the goal, you wanna keep growing but you just never change, really. We just learn more stuff.

The reason I wanted to go in with John Hill was because he did just that. He worked on the first Santigold record. I [also] worked with Dave Sitek and Dave Sardy, specifically on “Riot”, and they’ve produced a bunch of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs material, as well as TV On The Radio. What all these guys brought to the table was just something fresh. I feel really, really fortunate. I’m learning from some of the coolest people on the planet.

MetroLyrics: Is going on tour and performing live something that you hope to do in the near future?

Yeah. I’ve been talking with some really, really incredible people about the live show. I want to try and do the same thing with the live show that I do with my music: I wanna give people something that they’ve never experienced before. It’s really exhausting, but it’s worth it in the end.

MetroLyrics: What kind of music are you listening to at the moment? Is there anything that’s on your radar that you’re obsessed with right now?

Yes. I love Actress. Actress and Marnie Stern. I’ve been obsessed with her forever. I think that her perspective is really important. And it was a sound that I’ve never heard before. I was like, “You brave little fairy. I want to run around in circles and like go into battle with you”. *laughs* I’m looking forward to [her] new record. I’m always trying to find a way to work with these people that I love, but then I also feel like I need to prove my own art first. I need to make sure that I’m growing. I only care about [listening to] stuff that is taking me places that I’ve never been, ‘cause that’s where I wanna take people.

You know what I want to do? I wanna write with Katy Perry.

MetroLyrics: Yeah?

Because I think she wants to say more than she’s getting to. And I also think she’s getting to say what she wants to say, but there aren’t a whole lot of people who like care about pop stars as people either.

MetroLyrics: Right.

I think that she’s got an incredible voice and a pretty cool perspective. I don’t really love everything that she writes, but she’s a good songwriter. And people already need her in their lives. I don’t know how I would write with Katy Perry, but if I was to write with her, the only thing that I would do is just try to expose everything in her body that hurts. She’s already kind of is doing that. She hasn’t really gone there, but she knows how to.

MetroLyrics: Is there anybody else you’d like to write for?

In my life, I just write for me. But I think that, inevitably, I usually get a pretty good sense of what someone is like. But…I always just write for me. It’s more like therapy, really. *laughs*

MetroLyrics: Yeah, that’s essentially what [songwriting] is. It’s you putting your feelings out there in a certain way.

You just have to make it acceptable for people.

Get Money: The Richest Lyrics From Hip-Hop’s 5 Wealthiest Earners in 2013

$

Early today, Forbes released their list of Hip-Hop’s Wealthiest Artists in 2013 including reported numbers of how much each mogul is worth. We decided to dig up the richest-sounding most dripping-in-dough lyrics these businessmen — who are also rappers and musicians — have. Here’s our list:

1. Diddy: “Five carats on my hands wit the cuts / And swim in European figures / F**k bein a broke n***a”

from It’s All About The Benjamins

Diddy earned his reported $580 million from his long music career, which has spanned over 20 years and his incredibly successful business ventures that include his Sean John clothing line and his deal with Ciroc vodka. Also we heard he has a deal with the devil where every time he changes his stage name he gets a million dollars, which explains everything. Just kidding.

2. Jay-Z: “So I ball so hard m****f**** wanna fine me / But first n***as gotta find me / What’s 50 grand to a m****f**** like me / Can you please remind me?”

from N***as In Paris

Forbes reports that Jay-Z is worth $475 million, which he earned by being a mogul in the purest sense. This business, man started his own clothing line, Rocawear, and has big-money deals with Live Nation with regards to his own label Roc Nation. He also part-owns the Brooklyn Nets NBA team and has tons of investments in other companies, as any smart mogul does. Diversify!

3. Dr. Dre: “Hit my boys off with jobs, no more living hard / Barbecues every day, driving fancy cars / Still gon’ get mine regardless”

from Still D.R.E.

Any time you see Beats by Dre headphones on somebody, that’s money in this smart mogul’s pocket. Valued at $350 million, Dr. Dre sold Beats by Dre, then RE-bought it and the company is still growing. He’s also credited with discovering talents like Eminem and more recently Kendrick Lamar.

4. Birdman: “Hundred thousand a day on that sky rocket / From round the block doing this shit round the clock / Million dollar n***a doing this shit non-stop”

from I Get Money

Birdman, if you didn’t know, owns Cash Money records which boasts artists like Lil Wayne (who many confuse as Birdman’s actual son, which isn’t true), Nicki Minaj, and Drake. Anytime you hear an artist rep YMCMB in a song, Birdman just hears the sound of a cash register. ChaCHING!

5. 50 Cent: “I’m stanky rich, I’ma die tryna spend this shit / Southside’s up in this b***h / Yeah, I smell like the vault”

from I Get Money

We didn’t expect to see 50 Cent on this list, but here he is! Forbes reports that Curtis Jackson is worth $125 million from heavy sales of his albums and merchandise, as well as the sale of his company (yep) Vitamin Water! We hear his favorite flavour is the green one. Cause of money. Heh.

Can you come up with richer lyrics for these top 5 rap moguls? Tell us your suggestions in the comments…

You may think that having a famous dad with a household name would be Krystal Keith’s ticket to instant stardom, but the road to fame isn’t that effortless for Toby Keith’s daughter. Instead of setting up an easy recording deal for their musically-inclined child, Krystal’s parents encouraged her to enter singing competitions and get comfortable on stage. “My parents didn’t just want to hand me everything. They taught me to work for it and work hard,” says Krystal.

She finally got to sing in front of a national audience at the 2004 CMAs when she and her dad performed their cover of the classic Carly Simon and James Taylor song “Mockingbird” and now Krystal has her first EP coming out on April 16th! We wanted to get to know this up-and-coming country star a little better, so we asked her to fill out the My Musical Mind questionnaire – ACM Edition!
